Homes With ADA Features in Austin:
How to Find Them? I have been searching for a great website to advertise a wonderful home I have listed with many ADA features. I ran accross a lot of interesting stuff on the World Wide Web but not any websites to advertise these homes. Anybody have any suggestions? I am an SRES- a Seniors Real Estate Specialist. I like to help people who may have or anticipate mobility issues. It is a challenge helping people with special needs find an accommodating home. In our MLS there is one box to check: ADA Features? Yes or no? That's it! That's not tremendously helpful when you are trap zing around the country trying to help a deserving soul who simply has a couple more challenges than the average joe... I have a home with these features: ADA or “Aging in Place” FEATURES No step up to breezeway, stone ramp serves as an aesthetically pleasing wheelchair or dolly ramp. No carpet in home facilitates easier use of walker or wheelchair. Showers in all 3 bathrooms are easily accessible for wheelchairs or people with little mobility and ease of movement. All showers have showerheads that are adjustable up and down for use while sitting. Stainless handhold safety rails in all showers. Door handles to outside are a lever facilitating easy opening even with your elbow. I found a website about "An EasyLiving Homecm ". Their concept seems to fit my home I have for sale since it was designed to be my client's "aging in place" or forever home. A home built with ADA features can accommodate aging baby boomers through the aging process. Features that help make it easy to raise a baby, have children in the home can also make it easy as we age. Wide doorways, ramps, easy access large showers- all make it possible to live "easy" now AND in the future. : 1. Easy Access A step-free entrance into the central living area of the home from a driveway, garage, sidewalk or breezeway. Today: this provides convenient, safe entry even when your arms are full of shopping bags or small children. Tomorrow: this provides for easy entry for family and friends who rely on crutches, walkers or wheelchairs for mobility. 2. Easy Passage Ample room to pass through doorways. Today: Travel freely around the home even when carrying bulky items such as laundry baskets. Tomorrow: Complete access to all the necessary living spaces without narrow spaces or stairs. 3. Easy Use A home with the bedroom(s), kitchen, entertainment areas and at least a full bathroom with maneuvering space for a wheelchair and accessible via an entry ramp. Today: all on one level, no trips up and down stairs. Tomorrow: Relatives or friends with mobility issues can still visit. As one ages, a 1 story with accessible bathroom makes it possible to remain independantly at home much longer (or forever) should a condition develop.
