Hyde Park History
Monroe M. Shipe developed and promoted Hyde Park, Austin’s first planned suburb in the 1890’s. His vision was to have Hyde Park become a self-sufficient community much like the mixed use developments of today. Platted in 1891, by 1910 it was like a town in and of itself with its own churches, stores & recreation as well as almost every home growing its own vegetables, fruit and livestock. This is a concept like the wonderfully green mixed use developments city planners do today. Hyde Park was home to the first moonlight tower in Austin was installed at 41st and Speedway. The shady porches allowed for a cool place to be outside and enabled socializing, a trend that is coming back today. With the system completed in 1891 by N.M. Shipe, streetcars provided transportation to downtown for 50 years. Today, a century later there are no more livestock and many home’s carriage houses have now been converted to garages.
