Coupland Texas is a small but historic town northeast of Austin, Texas on Highway 95, north of 290. Located in Williamson County, Texas, Coupland was established in 1887 and has a small downtown with many historic buildings. Downtown Coupland Texas also has a fabulous sculpture garden created by Jim Huntington who moved from New York City to Coupland, TX in 2000. Jim Huntington has also lived in LA, Boston, and San Francisco. The Huntington Sculpture Foundation can be reached at 512- 856-2334 and is a non-profit 501 C 3 so donations are always appreciated. There is also Artist Dan Grife’s Studio in Coupland at 202 N. Commerce St. Also in Downtown Coupland, Texas is a restored Railroad Depot as well as the old Coupland Inn and Dancehall on Hoxie Street which has a dance hall that hosts live bands, a restaurant and a Bed and Breakfast. Ironwood Industries also is located in Coupland, Texas in a 100 year old brick building accross from the railroad tracks at 204 N. Commerce Street. I absolutely love their amazing ornamental ironwork but they also create custom furniture and contemporary sculpture.
Coupland is located east of IH 35 in a Blackland Prairie farmland region of dark, rich soil. This soil is sometimes called “black velvet” and retains water well. There are many family farms in this region over 100 years old. My family came to the land nearby in the early 1870’s to Lund Texas and New Sweden Texas areas just across the highway.
