Austin’s Solar Middle Income Neighborhood

Las Casas Verdes is a greenbuilt Solar new home project in South Austin. The project has applied for a 5 Star Rating with the City of Austin Greenbuilding Program. Back in July 2010, there was one model home ready and 19 other custom homes will be built. You can see the current map below.

Las Casas Verdes Green Homes Design and Systems

Passive Solar design – Each home is designed specifically for the lot it is on so it has the best solar and wind orientation. In the spring and fall when your windows are open, cool air comes in through your windows and causes the hot air to rise. The hot air rises and goes up into the thermal chimney or high open spaces above. There is a solar thermal system for hot water heated by the sun and a vast rooftop solar array of 3KW panels for some of the electricity. Having the solar panels on the south facing side of the roof makes them get lots of sun all day long. The homes have a HERS index rating of 31. The homes have small yards with drought resistant Buffalo grass lawns and other plantings of native or adapted plants suitable for our Texas Hill Country. There is more- please ask me.

Las Casas Verdes Austin Texas Rainwater Collection System

Las Casas Verdes GREEN homes in Austin TX have rainwater collection sytems which are used inside the homes in the commodes in the home as well as to water the landscape or perhaps wash your car. Imagine how much this will save you on your City of Austin water bill! Imagine how much more water will remain in Lake Travis since you save and use your rainwater! Did you know that rainwater is naturally soft? The standing seam metal roof is sustainable, acts as an external radient barrier and is a great roof for collecting precious rainwater. Additionally, the condensation from the air conditioning sytem is captured in the rainwater collection tank as well and is estimated to be about 6 gallons of water a day.

The homes are very modern in appearance. The homes are 2 story with a standing seam metal roof and cementious fiberboard (HardiPlank type) siding.
