LEED Certified Building: What Does That Mean?

One example of a LEED Certified building is the newly constructed Kohl’s store in Leander, Texas which has a sign in front indicating it is a LEED Certified Building. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The LEED Green Building Rating System is designed to both encourage and multiply sustainable green building and development around the world. The system uses tools and criteria that are universally accepted and understood. A look at the United States Green Building Council website (Web Address url below) under LEED for Retail: New Construction shows what LEED checklist new construction must follow to earn LEED certification. To obtain a “Certified” rating,  26-32 points must be earned; for Silver, 33-38 points must be earned; for Gold: 39-51 points must be earned. For the highest rating, Platinum, 52-69 points must be earned.
