Mueller, the Comunnity of the Future, the Community of the Past 

Mueller is a new urbanist, mixed use, master-planned, transit-oriented re-development in Austin, Texas which features green construction in both residential and commercial building. Some have called Mueller the greenest neighborhood in Austin (Austin Business Journal). Mueller is a United States Greenbuilding Council (or USGBC) LEED Silver certified neighborhood plan. Located alongside the east side of IH 35, the 711 acre Mueller re-development was formerly the old Robert Mueller Municipal airport. I can well remember the airplanes flying over IH 35 when Mueller was Austin’s airport. The master developer of Mueller is Catellus Development Group and per the Austin American Statesman Mueller at opening was “expected to add $1 billion to the city’s tax base and generate thousands of jobs, is the largest public-private venture in Austin’s history”. There are 5 types of housing options at Mueller which include garden homes, condos and apartments.

Mueller features many parks and green spaces – over 140 acres with play structures, beautiful lakes & 5 miles of hike and bike trails. The Wildflower Center has worked with Mueller in planting native prairie grasses in some of the greenspace areas. Many homes face Mueller Lake Park or have views of downtown Austin.

The first phase of homes at Mueller included plans for 348 homes.

The 2009 Parade of Homes showcased high end greenbuilt homes at Mueller. All homes at Mueller must be Austin 3 Star Green Building rating or better. Mueller Home Builders include the locally based Muskin Company, Saldana Homes and Streetman Homes as well as Durett Interests, LLC; Meritage Homes, Standard Pacific Homes and David Weekley Homes. 2,200 homes were planned for Mueller.
