Williamson County TX

Williamson County Texas is located just north of Travis County and most of Austin, Texas. Originally carved out of Milam County, there are many communities and municipal areas which are at least partly in Williamson County which include Austin, Bartlett, Cedar Park, Coupland, Florence, Leander, Georgetown, Granger, Hutto, Jarrell, Liberty Hill, Taylor, Thorndale, Thrall, Waterloo, Weir and Round Rock, Texas.  The County Seat of Williamson County is Georgetown Texas.  The Williamson County Appraisal District is the property taxing entity. Sometimes abbreviated as Wilco, Williamson County consists of about 1,135 square miles.

The eastern part of the county is mainly rolling prairie or blackland farmland while the western part is more rocky being the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country. Named after 3 Legged Willie, a Texas statesman named Robert M. Williamson. The Williamson County Historical Commission is a great place to get information on the history of Williamson County. Williamson County is the 12th biggest county in Texas when it comes to population.

Williamson County Texas Transportation

Williamson County Texas has many great new roads and Expressways to prepare for growth. One is the new 1 30 Expressway, over to the east, running parallel to and east of IH 35. Ronald Reagan, a huge new 4 lane divided highway with large shoulders also runs parallel to but west of IH 35 all the way to Georgetown. Ronald Reagan usually has many bicycle riders on the shoulders because they are so wide and there is little traffic. 183A is a new Expressway being finished now – January 2012. Williamson County Public Transportation

Williamson County Texas is served by both bus service and rail service. The Leander Station in the Leander Texas TOD or Transportation Oriented Development is the beginning point for the Capital Metro Commuter Rail Service into Austin Texas. There is a beautiful CARTS Station in Georgetown Texas with wind and solar power and 2 electric car charging stations powered by wind and solar energy. Taylor, Hutto and Round Rock are also served by CARTS. CARTS has connections to CapMetro busses. Wilco Politics

Politically, Williamson County has traditionally voted heavily Republican. The Williamson County Democratic Party Headquarters is located at 110 N. IH 35, Suite 110, Round Rock TX (IH 35 at 620). However, they are moving the headquarters to the Georgetown Square (July 2010). Williamson County Organizations

The Williamson County Historical Commission has a great website. Williamson County has an active chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT).  They meet at the Georgetown Public Library. I love Native Plants and attend NPSOT meetings when I can. There is also an Organic Gardening group called Expert Gardening Association of Williamson County (EGAWC). If you like to birdwatch, there is also a Williamson County Birdwatching group called the Williamson Audubon Group or (WAG). I am a member.

The Williamson County Sun is the county newspaper although most all small towns in Williamson County have their own.

Williamson County Early American Indian Tribes

One of our wonderful local historians, a Daughter of the Republic of Texas, Karen R. Thompson has written and shared so much of the rich history of Williamson County. Mrs. Thompson reports that an ealy Indian tribe in Williamson County was the Tonkawa tribe. Later Williamson County Indian tribes were the Comanches, the Lipan Apaches and the Tawakonis who she reports as having descended from the Caddo Indians.

Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter 1855 S.E. Inner Loop,Georgetown,TX is a great place to adopt a cat or dog, volunteer or donate. The Williamson County Academy, next door, teams with the shelter for the Kids N K9s program to train dogs at the shelter. Teenagers from The Academy each pair up with a dog and are instructed in training their chosen dog. The Kids N K9s dogs earn an AKC Canine Good Citizen ® or CGC certificate, videos of available dogs are posted on YouTube and the dogs are adopted. The teens and dogs have a graduation program at the Williamson County Academy after completion of the Kids N K9s program. The Williamson County cities of Hutto, Leander, Cedar Park and Round Rock partner with the WILCO shelter.
